The ASTS International Travel Grants are intended to support transplant professionals practicing in countries who would otherwise be unable to attend the ASTS Winter Symposium and/or the ATC namely due to financial or institutional constraints. The goal is to facilitate education, professional development, and participation in critical discussions related to transplant surgery. 

Award amount:  The award recipient(s) will receive: 

  • $5,000 honorarium for transportation, food allowance, and accommodations
  • All-access meeting registration (Winter Symposium or ATC)
  • Complimentary ASTS Membership for one year (access to ASTS resources and digital AJT)

Eligibility and Application Requirements:

  • All welcome to apply
  • Updated CV
  • A personal statement outlining financial need, anticipated educational benefit, and potential impact on their home program
  • A project proposal if intending to work with an ASTS member collaborator
  • A letter of support from A Surgery Department Chair or Transplant Program Director
  • Letter from an ASTS member (optional)

Exclusion Criteria:

Applicants are not eligible if they:

  • Have previously received an ASTS LMIC travel grant
  • Are unable to secure travel or visa documentation
  • Anticipate travel costs that substantially exceed the $5,000 cap without supplemental funding

Review criteria

The grants will be awarded based on need, not merit.

Additionally, all applications will be reviewed and scored by the ASTS IRC using a transparent rubric that includes: 

  • Demonstrated financial and institutional need
  • Career stage and relevance to transplantation 
  • Anticipated impact on the applicant’s home institution 
  • Geographic diversity (maximum of one award per country per year) 
  • Strength of the personal statement 
  • Abstract submission (bonus consideration)
